A new exhibition has been put together by staff from the Highland Archive Centre and Inverness Museum and Art Gallery.  The exhibition "William Glashan: Old Buildings of Inverness" celebrates the local architect William Glashan (1903-1981)who set out to paint the old buildings of Inverness prior to their demolition. Glashan moved to Inverness in 1949, having studied at the School of Architecture in Aberdeen before being based in Newcastle upon Tyne for 16 years. Throughout his life he painted street scapes and castles and became very passionate about the history of Inverness. In the 1950s and 1960s on hearing about plans to redevelop the town, he set out to record as many of the old streets and buildings as he could.
The paintings are accompanied by plans of the buildings which are part of the collections of the Highland Archive Centre . The Inverness Burgh Dean of Guild records provide further insight into the streetscapes by giving a indication of both the exterior and interior layout of the buildings.
The exhibition will run at the Highland Archive Centre from 25 June to 17 July 2014. Click here for further information.

Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre invites you to the opening of a new exhibition featuring the work of sisters Catriona and Mairead Macdonald, artists born in Karachi to Skye parents in the 1920s. The Macdonald family travelled extensively throughout the world but retained their native Gaelic and links with Skye relatives. This multicultural flavour is reflected in Catriona and Mairead's work, which includes cartoons, wallpaper designs, textiles and ceramic studies. The exhibition will show examples of the artwork alongside photographs, travel memorabilia and the sisters' family tree. Click here for further information.
